Weekend Comfort: Saturday Cinnamon & Sugar Donuts

I have never met a donut I do not like— but I have to be in the mood to eat it, Same goes for baking desserts. But when autumn season meets the weekends, my body automatically goes into baking mode. It’s like someone flips a switch. Then come January, I don’t want to bake anymore. LOL. One of the boys has been wanting homemade donuts, and I woke up ready to bake these delish cinnamon and sugar beauties. I find that unlike glazed donuts, which I like cold, these are better enjoyed fresh from the oven. The cinnamon and sugar combo is yummy and comforting,

I like to make these on Saturdays as a way to bring some fun into our breakfast. So here’s to Saturday morning breakfasts that aren’t serious, but rather fun. This is how you build memories in the kitchen. Happy Saturday, friends!

SATURDAY CINNAMON SUGAR DONUTS

DOUGH INGREDIENTS

  • 1½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ¾ teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg

  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • ¼ cup whole milk

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

CINNAMON SUGAR (FOR COATING) INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ cup butter, melted

STEPS

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a donut pan and set aside.

  2. In a bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. In a separate smaller bowl, combine all the wet ingredients. Slowly, pour the wet ingredients into the bowl containing the dry ones, mixing until combined.

  3. Spoon batter into a large ziplock bag or an extra piping bag, cutting the tip at a ½ inch hole.

  4. . Pipe the batter into the donut pan, filling 2/3 of the circles.

  5. Bake for 10 minutes (I like mine a dark golden color, so I leave them for 1-2 extra minutes).

  6. Once baked, let them cool in the pan for 5-8 minutes.

  7. To coat the donuts, brush them with melted butter, then dip the donut on the cinnamon sugar mix (I use a small bowl for this).

  8. Serve while warm with coffee or a cold glass of milk! Yum!
