Little Vases: Rich Autumn Hues

Happy September! Can you believe we are already heading into fall season? If you live in the U.S., today we are celebrating Labor Day weekend. And for many, this is the unofficial end of summer. But my garden feels like summer is just at its peak.

My entire garden is about one month behind. By now, all of my dahlias would be blooming. But they are just getting started. And after a slow going, dahlias are suddenly exploding in a riot of color, especially those in autumnal hues, and it is making me very happy. Today, I am sharing a little vase full of rich jewel tones.

This is my first year growing various dahlias in deep colors, as well as celosia. The celosia is still maturing, but I love where it is going. For today’s vase I combined varieties of these two flowers, and I have to be honest— this summer loving girl, is suddenly feeling very ready for fall.

I am also slightly obsessed with little vases, so I think I am going to start sharing these more. They are like little vases of fun! One of my favorite aspects of this combination of flowers is all the texture— from the intricate petals of the pompom dahlias (also my first year growing this type— usually I stick to decorative or dinner plate dahlias) to the feathery look of the celosia. So what varieties did I use?

  • Celosia ‘Coral Reef’ (orange one). The indoor light does not really lets you appreciate the beautiful orange color of this celosia, so I posted one photo below, growing outside)

  • Celosia ‘Pampas Plume’

  • Old Rose Mix dahlia (the bigger one)

  • Dahlia ‘Cornell’ (I am obsessed with this dahlia and how intricately perfect the petals are)

  • Dahlia ‘Beatrice’ (orange)

  • And because she deserves attention, even if it broke from the stem, Dahlia ‘Caitlin’s Joy’

  • Vase- this is a hyacinth bulb started vase that I use all year around to display flowers.

I really like the fun way it all came together. I hope it makes you smile like I did. Thanks for stopping by, friends! I wish you all a wonderful week ahead!
